Living in Shawnee

Shawnee sits in northern Johnson County, and it moves at a slower pace even though some of the busiest parts of the metro are a short drive away. You'll find established neighborhoods on the east side, newer homes out west, and plenty of local businesses that give the city its own personality.

Downtown Shawnee has come a long way, with local restaurants, breweries, and shops bringing new energy. My favorite thing about Shawnee is that it still has a small town feel while giving you everything you'd want from a bigger suburb.

It's the kind of place where you can settle in and really feel connected to your neighbors.

What people love here

  • Shawnee Mission Park: hiking, biking, paddleboarding, an off leash dog area, and lake views
  • Downtown Shawnee: local restaurants, breweries, shops, and community events
  • Shawnee Town 1929: a living history museum that shows what Shawnee looked like a century ago
  • Café Equinox: coffee inside the greenhouse at Family Tree Nursery
  • Theatre in the Park: outdoor summer shows at Shawnee Mission Park

Getting around

Interstate 435, Shawnee Mission Parkway, and Highway 7 connect you to the rest of the metro.
