Living in Olathe

Olathe is the county seat of Johnson County, and it's grown a lot over the years without losing that hometown feel. It sits on the southwest side of the metro, with a historic downtown, plenty of parks, and lots of shopping and dining.

What I like about Olathe is that life feels a little quieter and more laid back, but you're never cut off from the rest of Kansas City. You'll find established neighborhoods closer in and a lot of newer ones on the south and west sides.

If you want room to grow and plenty to explore, Olathe should be on your list.

What people love here

  • Lake Olathe Park: a swim beach, spray ground, kayaking, and trails around the lake
  • Heritage Park: trails, sports fields, a lake, and a dog park
  • Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm: a historic farm with seasonal stagecoach rides
  • Downtown Olathe: local businesses around the historic courthouse and events like Fourth Fridays
  • Ernie Miller Park and Nature Center: wooded trails and a nature center right in town

Getting around

Interstate 35, Highway 10, and Highway 7 make it easy to get to the rest of Johnson County and into Kansas City.

Schools

Most of Olathe is served by Olathe Public Schools, though some areas fall into the Blue Valley, Spring Hill, or Gardner Edgerton districts. Check the address to be sure.
