Living in Independence

Here's my honest take on living in Independence.

It's about as Kansas City as it gets: Harry Truman's hometown, with the Square still at the heart of it. A lot of buyers pick this side of State Line on purpose: you usually get more house for the money, and property taxes often run lower than parts of Kansas.

If you want a town with real history and real value, Independence is worth a look.

What people love here

  • Independence Square: local shops, restaurants, historic buildings, and community events
  • Truman Presidential Library and Museum: Truman's life and presidency, right in his hometown
  • Englewood Arts District: galleries, local businesses, public art, and Third Friday Artwalks
  • George Owens Nature Park: wooded trails, fishing lakes, and plenty of wildlife
  • Santa Cali Gon Days: the big Labor Day festival that takes over the Square

Getting around

Interstate 70, Interstate 470, Highway 24, and Highway 291 all run through town, and the stadiums are close. Interstate 70 is the main route downtown, so plan around traffic and construction.

Schools

Most of Independence is in the Independence School District, with some areas in the Fort Osage and Blue Springs districts. Always check the address on any home you like.
